DPW Fuel Technology Lead

The DPW Fuel Technology Lead will manage the on-site technology needs of the Fuel Department. They will work with the Burning Man Technology Staff to learn how to work on the back end of the fuel tracking application and create a training manual and instructional video on the use of the digital app. Once on site, the fuel tracking app will be updated and maintained by the DPW Fuel Technology Lead. This position will be responsible for training departmental staff on use of the app and will make themselves available to assist with the export of data as needed.
This position includes part-time training and development to be completed by mid-July.  The position runs full-time from August 4 - September 8, 2017.

  • Work pre-event with the Burning Man Technology Staff and Fuel Superintendent to finalize development and test the fuel tracking app, Fulcrum
  • Create a training manual and instructional video on the use of the fuel tracking app, ensuring that training materials are fully developed and prepared for e-learning use for pre-event online staff training  
  • Under the direction of the DPW Fuel Superintendent, take on a leadership role and be an expert in the fuel tracking app, being proactive in handling all issues relating to the app, and answering questions related to the back-end of its development and its user interface
  • Listen to any technical issues of individual app users, offering assistance in every manner practical
  • Be available on-site, to offer assistance during team operating hours, and prepared to occasionally work after team operational hours to handle system updates as needed
  • Take ownership of reviewing the accuracy of the app, troubleshooting when needed
  • Track, maintain and handle the hardware (iPhones) that will house the app and be responsible for loading updates as necessary. Be prepared and accessible to troubleshoot any issues with the hardware 
  • Maintain clear communication with the DPW Fuel Superintendent, updating them with the current status of the app and consulting them prior to rolling out any changes on-site
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with the Burning Man Technology Staff, coordinating workflow to develop the app and its supporting training materials
  • Anticipate any foreseeable issues with the app and, through consistent monitoring, stay current of its efficiency and accuracy
  • Create and maintain strong working relationships with the Burning Man Technology Staff, the DPW Fuel Superintendent and the department staff, effectively and professionally communicating with all parties and, when needed, serving as a teacher
  • Coordinate the pickup and drop-off of parts and equipment on the Playa as needed
  • Write and submit a final “Ember” report by the end of event cycle that summarizes, critiques, and provides a detailed assessment of departmental successes and things which could be improved
  • Perform various other duties as assigned by Black Rock City LLC.


  • A strong working knowledge of and familiarity with designing systems using a user-friendly interface similar to Wordpress
  • Able to effectively organize data
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • A professional demeanor in verbal and written communications with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Able to lead by example, with a willingness to motivate teams
  • Experience supervising major projects in remote wilderness and/or desert environment
  • Willing and able to relocate and travel
  • Knowledge of Burning Man, BRC, and its departments
  • Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada 



  • Prefer a candidate with a valid state issued Driver’s License and a clean driving record


Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.  


This is a temporary, full-time position ineligible for benefits, working out of Gerlach, Nevada.
