JOB SUMMARY 

The DPW Assistant Manager of Depot Fuel Operations is responsible for overseeing the setup, safety, operation, and strike of the DPW Staff Fuel Depot as it supports BRC infrastructure fuel needs. This role will manage the Depot team in the daily operations of the Staff Fuel Depot, ensuring a prompt operations schedule, and safe worksite. Responsibilities will include the accurate tracking of dispensed fuel, reviewing and collecting crew paperwork, daily logging of Fuel Department tank levels, and crew training.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Following provided plans, the DPW Assistant Manager of Depot Fuel Operations will directly oversee the setup, operation, strike and cleanup of the Staff Fuel Depot
  • Be available to receive equipment deliveries and direct placement including: buildings, tanks, wireless communications, fencing, power, and emergency equipment
  • Support daily safety inspections at the beginning and end of every shift and immediately report any concerns to the DPW Fuel Safety Lead
  • Ensure that BRC event staff fuel needs are met for duration of on playa operations
  • Manage the tracking of fuel distributed to staff and vendors from the Staff Fuel Depot
  • Register BRC Staff vehicles as needed
  • Review and sign off on all paperwork submitted by Depot Fuel Attendants before they clock out at the end of each shift, including tank open and close numbers and pump sheets
  • Collect daily fuel levels for all Fuel Department tanks on playa, assess fuel required for the following day, and compare that with the current fuel delivery schedule. Adjust orders as needed and submit revised fuel orders prior to 3 pm each day
  • Provide fuel to FAST for art burns as requested  
  • Work with the DPW Liquid Fuel Operations Lead and the DPW Fuel Mechanic Lead to maintain fuel tank equipment operations
  • Review and understand the Fuel Spill Response Plan and the BRC Rain Contingency Plan; assist in execution if necessary
  • Ensure that the Staff Fuel Depot is prepped before the DPW Morning Meeting and ready to open promptly at 8am each day
  • Coordinate with DPW Fuel Health and Wellness Volunteers to ensure that staff meals are delivered to the Fuel Attendants every day by noon. Ensure adequate staffing coverage is provided so that staff can rotate for lunch breaks on the work-site
  • Coordinate special requests for time off with Fuel Depot Staff
  • Help implement Burning Man’s integrated plan and work with all BRC departments to ensure fuel distribution and safety
  • Attend meetings and create reports as necessary to keep the Fuel Superintendent informed of the progress and/or problems of the project
  • Work with the DPW Fuel Crew to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans
  • Attend and support crew attendance to daily Morning Meetings
  • Write and submit the final “Ember” report by the end of event cycle addressing the successes and failures of the season

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be familiar and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies
  • Maintain DPW related correspondence via assigned Burning Man mailing lists
  • Perform various other duties as assigned by the DPW Fuel Superintendent, and the DPW Construction and Utilities Superintendent

  • Documentation – Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff and volunteers in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Training development – Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
  • Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff and volunteers. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of Burning Man, BRC, and its departments
  • Training in liquid fuel handling safety and protocols
  • Working knowledge of OSHA compliant personal protection equipment, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers
  • Able to climb a ladder and safely transverse the top of the fuel storage tanks to measure the fuel levels
  • Capable of safely and comfortably lifting and pulling 35 lbs.
  • Organized — able to efficiently track fuel and department data
  • Familiarity with Google Suite software: Docs, Sheets, and Gmail
  • A professional demeanor in verbal and written communications
  • Experience working in leadership positions in remote wilderness and/or desert environments
  • Able to lead by example, motivate, and have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Willing and able to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada  

PREFERRED

  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture

 

REQUIRED LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS

  • Must have a valid state issued driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • OSHA 10 Certification, or completion of  OSHA 10 training with DPW

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required. Will handle phone calls, emails, part pickups, errands as deemed necessary (ie. pick up parts)

On-playa: Work is primarily active in nature in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.  Will be required to climb a ladder and safely transverse the top of the fuel storage tanks to measure the fuel levels. Must be able to lift and pull 35 lbs.
